Dachshund
The Dachshund probably belongs to the same family as the Basset Hound. A German dog of ancient origins, it can be seen on Egyptian bas-reliefs. There are three types of Dachshund of distinctly differing size and coat: long haired, smooth haired and wire haired. Its size might suggest that the Dachshund is a lap dog, but in fact it is an excellent terrier, once used for badger hunting. It is generally thought of as a pet which is nervous, restless, obstinate, liking its own way, temperamental and jealous. None of which stops its owners from being besotted by it or letting their lives be taken over by the dog! The Dachshund has no equal when it comes to getting around people.
Depending on type the size varies from 12-22cm (5-9 inches) in height. Weight varies from 9kg (18 pounds) for the Standard Dachshund to 4kg (9 pounds) for the Medium Dachshund and 3.5kg (8 pounds) for the Miniature. The coat is red or bi-colored: black and brown or silver with white markings. An all white, or all black, coat is considered a fault.
